New Mexico Ag Expo set for Feb. 19-20, 2013 in Portales, NM
The New Mexico Ag Expo marks its 21st year with its annual two-day show set for Feb. 19-20 at the Roosevelt County Fairgrounds in Portales, NM.
This year’s Expo is sponsored by Plateau and Dairy Farmers of America and will be dedicated to the memory of long-time Ag Expo Committee members Frankye King who died in 2012. The event is organized and run by the Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce and New Mexico State University Extension Service.
Update on MILC Program
The dairy industry is a major contributor to the New Mexico Ag Expo and an important part of the Eastern New Mexico and West Texas economy. Given the economic position of most dairies today they are looking for every opportunity to change their bottom line. The 21st Annual New Mexico Ag Expo is proud to have DFA as one of our major sponsors and look forward to them bringing Lawrence Rael, Executive Director of New Mexico Farm Service Agency to discuss changes to the MILC program. Mr. Rael will speak on Wednesday, February 20, 2013 following the Dairy Farmer’s of America Luncheon at noon in the Jake Lopez Bldg. located on the Roosevelt County Fairgrounds. Mr. Rael will speak on changes to the MILC program due to the lapse in the 2008 Farm Bill. All dairymen looking at making decisions this month on MILC contracts need to hear this update.
Saddle Up a Longhorn
The New Mexico Ag Expo will welcome back the Texas Longhorn steers from the herd of the Folsom Falls Ranch.
Fred Balmer and a crew of three or four Texas Longhorns and an equal number of unorthodox cowboys and cowgirls will be on hand to show off the impressive size and horns of this historic breed. Fred’s Longhorns are a little different from most as they saddle up the bovines and ride them in the Ag Expo parade twice a day.
Rotary Chuckwagon Barbecue
One of the most mouth-watering traditions at the New Mexico Ag Expo is the Chuckwagon Barbecue held 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 19 and sponsored by the Portales Rotary Club.
Club members bring two barbecue pits to the fairgrounds each year and start the real wood fire early in the morning. By late morning they’re cooking up platters of smoky pork chops that melt in your mouth.
Simply Supper
Do you hate to hear those dreaded words. . . “What’s for supper?” Connie Moyers, Roosevelt County Extension Home Economist, has the answer. She will present a cooking school featuring “Simply Supper” Wednesday, Feb. 20, during the 21st New Mexico Ag Expo sponsored by Plateau.
Participants will receive simple recipes, tips and hints that will make this task easier. The cooking school will be held in the Cacahuate Room of the Jake Lopez Building on the Roosevelt County Fairgrounds at 10 a.m. The school is sponsored by U.S. Bank.

A 14-foot stock trailer is given away each year at the New Mexico Ag Expo. To register for the drawing, merely attend this year’s show and visit vendors.
Tickets to enter the trailer giveaway may be obtained at the gate. Visitors must take the tickets to designated booths and have them punched. They will then be dropped into ballot boxes located throughout the fairgrounds. There is no admission to the Expo.
