Calf Weaning Methods and the Current State of Animal Welfare in the U.S. Portales, NM — Given the state of our economy and the importance of making every dollar count the New Mexico Ag Expo Committee is proud to bring Dr. Clay Mathis, New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension Livestock Specialist and Mr. Boone Carter, NMSU Extension Associate in Animal Science to talk about two issues that impact all cattle producers in New Mexico. Dr. Mathis will provide direction on calf weaning methods to reduce subsequent health problems and Mr. Carter will offer a look into the ever changing and volatile topic of Animal Welfare. Dr. Mathis will present his talk on Wednesday, February 24th at 10 a.m. in the Cacahuate Room in the Jake Lopez Bldg. He will discuss weaning approaches recently evaluated by NMSU. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn about improving calf health in the upcoming year. Following Dr. Mathis will be Mr. Carter, discussing how animal welfare affects all producers in animal agriculture. It doesn’t matter the state or the species but those groups opposed to animal agriculture are vigorously perusing their cause at agriculture’s expense. This should prove to be an excellent opportunity to gain insight and understanding into a topic that is an issue for all livestock producers. These should prove to be two excellent talks for livestock producers so don’t miss out on this opportunity. If you need more information or are interested in attending please contact the Roosevelt County Extension Office at 575.356.4417.
